First and foremost, fishing on the border can be confusing for first time visitors. Be aware of licensing regulations, particularly if fishing in The Murray (a NSW fishing license is required, even if fishing from Victorian banks). Many species are also subject to open and closed seasons and daily bag limits.
There are plenty of places to fish from the bank along the Murray River including Police Paddocks, Shaws Flats, Granthams Bend and Stantons Bend.
Lake Moodemere is a great fishing spot being peaceful and secluded, close to town, and easily accessed. Redfin are most common within the lake and carp provide some fun for the kids.
Lake King is a small manmade lake in Rutherglen and offers carp for the kids, and has recently been stocked with Yellowbelly.
A short drive will take you to prized freshwater fishing grounds including Lake Mulwala, Lake Hume and Dartmouth Dam.
